RTI: KMT caucus' second press conference
The KMT legislative caucus held a press conference yesterday calling for all political appointees given posts during the Chen administration should resign, even if they have time left on their term, now that Ma has been elected.
Today they decided to follow up with a second, similar press conference.
KMT caucus deputy secretary-general Yang Chiung-ying (楊瓊瓔) said that nationally owned organs like RTI should not fall into the hands of partisans (read: Green-leaners) and that the current director and supervisors should voluntarily resign.
Yang claimed that certain RTI programs take national money and use it to attack Ma Ying-jeou on false grounds, and that these people ought to quit. As far as I see no specific examples were given of false attacks.
KMT legislator Kuo Su-chun (郭素春) called or the resignation of the director and officers of the board, saying they should resign "if they have done anything illegal or lied." This despite no evidence they have done either.
The ever-infuritating legislator Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) claimed that RTI had become a DPP prograpanda organ, pushing the DPP's "one side, one country" message to the point that even the words "Republic of China" had disappeared from programing. She asked to compare this to Voice of America: would VOA have broadcast content that attacked Democratic candidate Obama?

First, Hung's example is dumb since Obama's party does not control the presidency as the KMT does.
Second, VOA is very happy to publish articles that are critical or include critical information on Obama and his policy. This is not the first time Hung had no idea what she was talking about; she knows jack shit about Taiwan's own education policy as well from everything I've seen. In fact, I've rarely heard her say anything even remotely insightful.
Further, another US nationally-funded domestic radio station, NPR is perfectly willing to publish articles about its own bias. People do systematic studies of that purported bias. And they have guests that make analysis from both the left and right.
And third, Hung's statement about "one side, one country" being the real problem at RTI under the DPP just goes to show what the KMT's real concern is. It doesn't matter to her that Taiwan is a country separate from China, or that virtually all Taiwanese agree with "one side, one country," or that "Taiwan" makes for much better identification of the island than "Republic of China" when broadcasting to a largely uninformed international audience in so many languages. By God, we are Chinese.
